What to check when they are reversed
On a desktop setup, start at the back of the speakers: crossed cables are by far the most common cause. Then check any adapter in the chain, since cheap ones occasionally reverse the channels, and confirm you have not simply placed the physical speakers on the wrong sides of the desk.
With headphones, check you are not wearing them backwards. The markings are often tiny and moulded in matching plastic, and detachable-cable models can be assembled either way round.
When one side is silent instead
Swap the two speakers over, or turn the headphones around, and run the test again. If the silence follows the speaker, that side has failed. If it stays on the same side no matter what you plug in, the fault is the cable, the port, or a balance setting pushed fully to one side.
Balance is worth checking early because it is invisible until you test one channel at a time, and both Windows and macOS keep it in a sound settings panel most people never open.
Why it is worth checking at all
Reversed channels are almost impossible to notice in ordinary listening, and they quietly ruin anything positional — a film mix, or hearing which side footsteps are coming from in a game. It takes ten seconds to rule out and people go years without knowing.
Frequently asked questions
- I can hear a faint sound from the other speaker too. Is that wrong?
- No. With speakers, sound crosses the room and reaches both ears whichever one produced it. Headphones give a much cleaner result, so use them if you need certainty.
- Can I test a surround setup this way?
- Not fully. The browser plays into the standard stereo output, so surround channels are not addressed individually. Use your operating system's own speaker setup tool for a full surround check.
