What this test checks
The test counts animation frames the browser delivers, which normally matches your monitor's refresh rate.
Variable refresh rate, battery saving modes and background tabs all reduce the measured value, so run the test on mains power with the tab in front.
On multi-monitor setups the reading follows the monitor the browser window sits on.
Common refresh rate problems
A 144 Hz monitor reporting 60 Hz is usually still set to 60 Hz in the display settings, or is connected with a cable that cannot carry the higher rate.
Frequently asked questions
- How is refresh rate measured here?
- By timing how often the browser can present a frame over a short sample. On a healthy system the browser is paced by the display, so the frame rate it achieves matches the refresh rate — which is why the reading lands close to 60, 120, 144 or 240.
- Why is my reading slightly off, like 59.9 or 143.8?
- That is expected. Displays do not run at exactly round numbers, and the measurement samples over a short window, so a fraction of a hertz either way is normal. A reading far below what you expect is the one worth investigating.
- I have a 144 Hz monitor but this reports 60. What should I check?
- The refresh rate is not actually set. Change it in your display settings — most systems default to 60 Hz. Also check the cable and port: some HDMI versions and cables cannot carry a high refresh rate at your resolution, where DisplayPort usually can.
- Does a variable refresh rate display affect the result?
- It can. With G-Sync or FreeSync active the refresh rate moves with what is on screen, so the number may sit below the panel's maximum or drift while measuring. For a stable reading, measure with variable refresh disabled.
- Can the browser limit the measurement?
- Yes. A background tab, battery saver, or a browser capping frame rate to save power will all reduce the number. Measure in a focused window, on mains power, with other demanding tabs closed.
