How to use the vibration test

Hold the phone in your hand rather than resting it on a desk, then trigger each pattern. A short buzz checks the motor responds at all, a long one checks it sustains, and the pattern checks it can start and stop cleanly in quick succession.

If nothing happens

On an iPhone, nothing will ever happen. Safari on iOS does not implement the Vibration API, so no web page can drive an iPhone's taptic engine. That is a browser restriction and says nothing at all about your hardware.

On Android, work through silent mode, the system haptic and vibration settings, and battery saver, which disables vibration on many devices. Some Android builds also ignore vibration requests from a tab that is not in the foreground, so keep the page open and focused.

Judging the result

A healthy motor produces a clean, even buzz that starts and stops sharply. A rattle, a buzz that sounds loose, or one that varies in strength usually means the motor has come away from its mounting, which is a common consequence of a drop.

Perceived strength varies a lot between phone models, so comparing against a different handset tells you less than you would think. Compare against how the same phone used to feel.
