How to use the keyboard test

Click anywhere on the page, then press every key one by one. Keys light up blue while held and stay green once detected. Press Reset test to start over.

What this test checks

The test listens to the browser's raw key events and reports the physical key code your keyboard sends. If a key never lights up, the switch, the cable or the keyboard controller is not sending that signal.

Because it reads the key code and not the typed character, it works with any keyboard layout. Modifier keys, arrows and function keys are all tracked separately, so you can tell a stuck Shift from a dead letter key.

A few keys are handled by the operating system before the browser sees them, so combinations like Alt+Tab or the Print Screen key may not register here.

Common keyboard problems

Dead keys usually mean debris or a failed switch. Repeating or doubled characters point to a worn switch or aggressive key repeat settings. If several keys fail only when pressed together, that is ghosting rather than a broken key.

Frequently asked questions

Why does one of my keys not light up?
The browser never received an event for it. That points at the hardware — a failed switch, debris under the keycap, or a broken connection in the keyboard matrix — rather than at software. Before opening the keyboard, try the same key in a different application to confirm, and if it is a wireless board, check the battery and re-pair it.
Why do Alt+Tab, the Windows key or Print Screen not register?
The operating system handles those before any web page sees them. That is expected behaviour and not a fault with your keyboard. Test them by watching whether they perform their system action instead.
Does the test work with my keyboard layout?
Yes. It reads the physical key code your keyboard sends, not the character your layout produces, so an AZERTY, QWERTZ or Dvorak board is tested exactly like a QWERTY one. The on-screen labels follow a US layout, but the key in the same physical position is the one that lights up.
Several keys stop working when I hold others down. Is the keyboard broken?
Almost certainly not. That is ghosting, and it is a limit of how your keyboard scans its matrix rather than a fault. The key rollover test measures how many keys yours can report at once.
A key registers twice when I press it once. What causes that?
Usually a worn switch that bounces as it closes. It can also be an aggressive key repeat delay in your system settings, so check those first — a bouncing switch will repeat at random, while a repeat setting is consistent.
