How to use the speaker test
Start with a low volume, then play each tone in turn and listen for buzzing, rattling or silence.
What this test checks
Tones are generated in your browser with the Web Audio API, so nothing is downloaded or streamed.
Different frequencies expose different faults: low tones reveal rattling enclosures, high tones reveal blown tweeters.
If one tone is missing entirely, the speaker may be damaged or your system equaliser is filtering it.
Common speaker problems
Distortion at higher volumes usually means a damaged driver. No sound at all is more often a wrong output device or a muted channel.
Frequently asked questions
- I hear nothing at all. What should I check first?
- The output device. If your system is sending sound to a monitor over HDMI, to a Bluetooth headset that is still connected, or to a device that is switched off, the speakers in front of you stay silent through no fault of their own. Check the output device before suspecting the hardware.
- The tone buzzes or rattles. Is the speaker damaged?
- Often, but not always. A damaged cone or a loose enclosure buzzes at particular frequencies. Before concluding that, lower the volume — a driver pushed past its limit distorts even when healthy — and check that nothing near the speaker is vibrating in sympathy.
- Is it safe to run at full volume?
- Start low and raise gradually, especially with headphones. Test tones carry more sustained energy than music at the same volume setting, so they are both louder to your ears and harder on small drivers.
- Can I test a specific speaker in a surround setup?
- Not individually. The browser plays into the standard stereo output your system provides, so surround channels are not addressed separately. Use your operating system's own speaker setup tool for a full surround check, and the left/right test here for stereo.
