How to use the orientation test

Make sure rotation lock is off, then turn the device through portrait, landscape and back the other way. The outline on screen should follow, the angle should change, and each orientation you reach lights up in the list.

What is being reported

This reads the screen orientation the operating system has settled on, not the raw sensor. That distinction is the whole point: when someone says their screen will not rotate, the sensor is usually working perfectly and something above it has decided not to act on it.

Most phones never report the upside-down portrait orientation, so reaching three of the four is a completely normal result. Tablets generally support all four. Desktop browsers report landscape and stay there, since there is nothing to rotate.

If rotation is not working

Check rotation lock first, in the control centre or quick settings. It is by far the most common cause and it is a setting rather than a fault. Some apps also lock their own orientation regardless of the system setting.

If rotation is unlocked and the orientation here still never changes, run the gyroscope test. If the sensor angles move there but the orientation never updates here, the problem is in the operating system rather than the hardware, and a restart resolves it surprisingly often.

How is this different from the gyroscope test?
The gyroscope test reports the raw sensor angles. This reports what the operating system decided to do with them — the orientation the screen is actually in. When someone says their screen will not rotate, the sensor is usually fine and this is the test that shows where it breaks down.
