How to use the vibration test

Connect the controller, press a button on it so the browser can see it, then trigger each motor in turn. Testing the strong and weak motors separately is the point: games mix them, so a failed motor is easy to miss until you drive each one on its own.

What the two motors do

Most controllers contain two motors with differently weighted counterweights. The heavier one produces a low, deep rumble and the lighter one a faster, higher-frequency buzz. Between them they cover the range of effects a game asks for, and each can fail independently.

A motor that produces a rattle rather than a clean buzz has usually worked loose from its mounting, which is common after a drop.

Browser support is the usual reason nothing happens

Vibration is exposed through the Gamepad API's haptics extension, which Chrome and Edge implement and Firefox and Safari do not. Many controllers also only expose rumble over a USB connection, so a pad that vibrates perfectly well in games over Bluetooth can be completely silent here.

Because of that, silence in this test is not evidence of a fault on its own. Confirm in a game over a USB cable before concluding the motors have failed.
