A trigger that stops short has worn or dirty travel; one that never returns to zero is being held by debris or a failing sensor. Buttons rather than analog triggers on some controllers report only 0 or 1.

How to use the trigger test
Connect the controller, press a button so the browser can see it, then pull each trigger slowly from rest to fully pressed and let it return. The bar follows the analog value and the readings underneath record the lowest and highest points reached, so you can see the whole stroke rather than just whether it fired.
What good looks like
Rest should sit at or very near 0.000 and a full pull should reach close to 1.000, giving a travel figure near 1. A trigger that stops at 0.8 has lost part of its range, which in a racing game means never getting full throttle and in a shooter can mean a shot that never registers.
A trigger that does not return to zero is being held partly pressed. Debris in the travel is the common cause, and a failing potentiometer or hall sensor is the other.
When triggers report only 0 or 1
Some third-party and older controllers present their triggers to the browser as digital buttons rather than analog axes, and a few need a specific driver mode to expose the analog value. In that case the bar will jump straight from empty to full, which is a reporting limitation rather than a fault in the trigger.
Controllers with a trigger stop switch, common on competitive pads, deliberately shorten the pull. If travel looks low on a controller that has one, check the switch before suspecting wear.

- The gamepad test shows whether a trigger registers. This shows the whole analog stroke: where it rests, how far it travels, and whether it reaches full press. A trigger that no longer reaches 1.000 or no longer returns to 0.000 is failing while still appearing to work.
