How to be sure it is the mouse
Click deliberately, once per second, and watch for a second click appearing on its own. Fast clicking proves nothing — the point is that a fault shows up even when you click slowly and carefully.
Then test the same mouse on another computer. If it double clicks there too, the switch is at fault. If it behaves, look at vendor software, macro bindings, and the double-click speed setting in your system preferences.
Why it happens, and what fixes it
The metal contact inside a micro switch loses tension over millions of presses and starts to bounce as it closes, so one physical press sends two electrical signals. It develops gradually, which is why a mouse that was fine last month can be unusable this month.
There is no software fix. Lowering the double-click speed hides the symptom without stopping the extra signal. The real repairs are replacing the switch — straightforward if you can solder — or replacing the mouse. Some switches can be revived temporarily by cleaning or gently bending the contact leaf.
A mouse still under warranty is worth claiming: double clicking is a well known failure mode and most manufacturers replace without argument.
